Fox Warfield
San Francisco
Bob spent the first half of 1979 growing in his newfound faith, and writing the gospel songs that would appear on Slow Train Coming. That LP was released in mid August. By November, he was ready for his first concert in nearly a year. The first series of concerts for the new gospel tour would be 14 shows performed over a two week residency at San Francisco's famed Fox Warfield Theater. This CD presents the very first gospel concert, and includes the entire Dylan performance. While it is a historic event, it's not great quality, nor is it even a convincing performance. The packaging is fair, though the front cover a bit grandiose. This is an important event, and hard core gospel fans and historical completeists will want to own it. However, by the final show of this residency, the band had gelled. Dylan had relaxed, and the performance and recording quality are incredible. For those who only need one representation of the Fox residency, that recording can be found on the 2 CD set entitled Contract With The Lord.
